4 Goal 4 Zone SSG (20 mins)

Score

Objective:To develop the transition from attack to defence when immediate pressure on the ball carrier isn't possible.

Set Up: In a 40*40 area create 4 equal grids (2 attacking and 2 defending grids for each team). There is a goal with a goalkeeper in each grid with 2 teams of 5 players each.

The activity starts with one team in possession (red in diagram) with a 5v4 situation. The 5th player for the defensive team (blue) is positioned in parallel grid ready for transition from defence to attack.

The 5 red attackers try to score against the 4 blue defenders inside the grid in which play originally starts. The 4 blue defenders try to win the ball and play to the 5th player in the other grid then try to score in either of the 2 goals in their attacking half.

Coaching Points:

- Teams should look to exploit numbers up situation to score when starting with possession initially by playing quickly

- Once possession is lost all 5 players should transition quickly to prevent initial penetration

-Organize and get in defensive shape quickly

- Team transitioning to defence must also be aware of players advancing centrally and on the weakside/farside to be most effective at stopping counter attack

5v5 Transition SSG (25 mins)

Teams

Set Up: Use a 40*40 griddivided into 2 halves and play a regular 5v5 game to 2 goals. There are also 4 extra players for each team on the sides (2 on each side).

When a team finishes an attack (shot that is either scored or goes out of play) a player from the opposing team dribbles in with a new ball to attack with numbers up (6v5).

If team in transition from defence to attack (blues in diagram) score a goal they get 1 point

If team in transition from attack to defence (reds in diagram) win the ball back they get 1 point. If this happens that team has 12 seconds to score (2 points).

Coaching Points:

Teams To Score 2 Goals

- Maintain good positions when you have possession, so you can react quickly and efficiently when possession is lost, thus reducing the risk.

Teams

5v5 (+2) Tactical (25 mins)

Set Up:

Using a full pitch create a middle zone. The red team has 3 center backs, 2 wing backs, and 1 defensive midfield from 3-5-2 formation. There are 5 blue midfield opponents in a 2-3 formation with 2 additional players outside at the sides on the halfway line.

The 5 blue players start by keeping possession (without attacking the goal) and the 6 red defenders work together as a group and take up the correct position in relation to where the ball is - one player presses the ball carrier and the other provide cover without initially trying to win the ball. The players wait for the coach signal one of the 2 outside players who receives a pass from the coach and enters the pitch. The blues then try to score in a 7v6 situation. The red team must respond quickly to defend the attack.

Rules:

1. Once outside player receives the ball from the coach the blue team has 10 seconds to score

2. If the blue team scores they get 2 points. If the red team prevent them from scoring they get 1 point.

Coaching Points:

  • When in transition players need to drop off and give other players time to recover
  • Collective/team shape must be good. Players need to make sure they don't leave large spaces between each other in the defensive line
