The first ever goal scored in the Premier League was way back in 1992 when Brian Dean's 5th minute strike put Man United a goal behind on their way to losing their first game in the newly formed league. But looking to more recent times it took a longish 15 minutes for Stewart Downing to smash in the first goal of last season against West Ham, and the season before that we had to wait an entire summer and an agonising 27 minutes and 15 seconds for Stephen Hunt of Hull City to get his name on the score sheet against Chelsea.

But it's not all doom and gloom, in the 08/09 season Samir Nasri got the season off to a much quicker start bagging Arsenal's only goal in a 1-0 win over West Borm at Highbury after just 4 minutes. Regular players will know that when we look at the first goal of any week it could be as little as 2 minutes or as much as 30 minutes before that first Premier League net bulges.

It might only be one game but getting your season off to a flying start could be priceless come the final beckoning and it can help establish a valuable front foot position for any side taking a lead back to the dressing room at half time.

The top 4 from the half time tables of last season are Man United, Man City, Arsenal and surprisingly Blackburn who went in with a lead in 14 of their 38 Premier League matches and yet some how still managed to only come away 11 wins over all. But you might also want to take a look at the newly promoted teams, the adrenalin charge provided by being in the big league and the fantasy of realising a dream can bring extraordinary, turbo charged performances from ordinary players as shown by Blackpool who went in 3-0 up after their first ever 45 minutes of Premier League football on the opening day last season, and they were playing away!

But on the reverse of that West Brom went in 2-0 at half time at Stamford Bridge and went on to lose the game 6-0 with the other newly promoted side Newcastle suffering a similar fate having gone in 2 down after 45 horrid minutes at Old Trafford.

After a summer spent clawing at and pretending to care about the tennis and cricket shaped ashes of entertainment which followed the fiery end to a thrilling Premier League season, the real sport of kings is back and us football fans will be demanding entertainment in the guise of lots of goals.

On the opening weekend of last season only 3 out the 10 games played produced goals from both sides. This was a very low number considering the fact that over the course of the season double that number of matches ended with both sides having scored at last one goal. This would suggest that whilst some teams start the season with the same intent as they might end it, quite a few have a tendency to start very cagey or worse still with their minds still on their summer holidays.

The demise of the 'big 4' was set in motion by Spurs' 4th place finish in the season before last, and finally laid to rest when Man City gatecrashed the party at the expense of Liverpool and Spurs last season. The devastation with which finishing 5th was received by Redknapp, and the renewed cut and thrust of Liverpool under Dalglish would indicate that the seasonal objective for no fewer than 6 Premier League clubs is now qualification for the Champions League. But if last season's barrage of shock results, giant killings and under dog days are anything to go by there may be even more than 6 sides competing for the top honours this season and the fun of the the big sides failing to win the best prizes at the fair could will be in fully swing from the first day.

The big 6 have all been busy this summer strengthening their squads and spending mega millions. After a miserly summer last time out Sir Alex has renewed his vigour for Premier league glory and spent in excess of £50m on new talent.

Ashley Young and Phil Jones have arrived for around £16m a piece, whilst 20 year old Spanish Goalie cost Sir Alex nearly £20m and Nasri could yet be on the way.

Arsenal haven't added a huge amount considering what they may lose but it does at least look like Gervinho will be arriving shortly, and even though 15 goals in 35 French League games may not be a bad stat you have to wonder where he'll fit in when Van Persie is fit. The fact that he also got 10 assists does suggest he is capable of filling in out wide.

There is bound to be some movement at Chelsea with Tevez, Modirc and a multitude of others as potential transfer targets whilst Liverpool have added Henderson, a questionable buy at £20m (but then again Carrol was questionable at £30m) and finally got their man in Charlie Adam for £7m but again you have to wonder how regularly either player will feature. Finally to Man City who's most notable signings so far are Gael Clichy and Sergio Aguero.

If anything the 2010/2011 was the season where having the 12th man at home really made all the difference. No away match was a dead certain 3 points for any traveling team regardless of who wast at either end of the pitch.

In fact the highest number of away wins by any side was 8 out of 19 and league champions Man United managed just 5, so even with your eyes closed a punt against any away side gives you a better than a 50/50 chance of being right.

The opening day fixture list this time around provides ample opportunity for an early upset or two. Man United travel away to The Hawthornes, which became as difficult a place to go to as you might expect from your classic Roy Hodgson side. West Brom lost only 2 of their final 12 games of the season under Hodgson and even though Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton and Villa were the visitors to the Hawthornes only one of them managed to walk away with all 3 points. If the Baggies end of season form is anything to go by, United will have a tough task on their hands.

Chelsea meanwhile travel to another team with a long standing reputation for being as good as anyone in the league when playing at home. Tony Pulis' Stoke lost only 5 games at home all of last season and with Chelsea winning only around one third of their away matches a win will be a bigger ask for the Blues than it might first seem but also a minimum requirement of meeting expectations for the boss who reportedly cost Chelsea £13m in what was effectively a transfer fee.

Arsenal make up the trip of title challengers who start their campaigns away from home as visitors to Pardew's Newcastle United. St. James' Park was the scene of one of the games of the season last term with the Gunners racing in to an incredible 4-0 lead inside of 26 minutes, but they hadn't accounted for the brazen toughness of the Geordie 12th man as the second half produced one of the finest come backs this league has ever seen with Newcastle fighting their way back to 4-4 inside of a crazy 19 second half minutes to prevent Arsenal from becoming only the 6th side to win in Newcastle.

The only battle bigger than the one Liverpool's alter egos had between each other last season, was the one in which Man City emerged victorious in the final throwes of the season by bringing home their first trophy for 35 years, and relegating Arsenal to 4th.

Whilst Wenger's men are no strangers to 4th position having finished there 4 times in the last 6 seasons, what makes this particular 4th place notable is that it is the first time a team outside of the traditional big 4 of Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea has finished ahead of the Gunners in 15 years, and Arsenal fans may be fearful that this may be an indicator of an immanent fall from grace, especially as at the time of writing Arsenal were wall on their way to losing 5 established Premier League players and replacing them with either nothing or fancy sounding names that if your honest with yourself you'll admit you've never heard of, so their fears could yet becoming a self fulfilling nightmare for one the leagues usually highest scoring sides.

Man City on the other hand seem to be a side on their way up, and with wage budgets and transfer budgets expectation is also rising at Eastland's and a title challenge will no doubt be on the agenda. The only cause for concern at City is that despite having more £20m strikers than the gunners could ever dream of, out of the whole lot only Tevez really produced the goods, and without him City looked dangerously flat at the front, and produced even fewer goals than normal.

As the lowest scorers in the top 5 of the league last season you'd have to conclude their season was built on 2 main factors, firstly Carlos Teves, and second their rock solid defence so an opening day test against newly promoted Swansea could produce an opportunity for City to revert from type and callously flex their multitude of attacking options on an unsuspecting side.

2 of the 3 teams that were promoted from the Championship survived their first season in the Premier League in 10/11 and managed to achieve respectable mid-table positions to boot.

Even though both Newcastle and West Brom inexplicably sacked their managers half way through the season in hindsight us mere mortals of armchair football who were shocked by the harsh ejections of Chris Hughton and Roberto di Matteo, and chose those moments to climb back on board our pedestals to cry foul of knee jerk reactions and impatient boards, can look back and excuse our objections to the magic of football knowledge beyond our understanding, after all these decisions turned out to be very good ones.

Even Blackpool who stuck with their enigmatic boss were in the running right up until the last day so the newly promoted trio of QPR, Norwich and Swansea would be forgiven for harbouring hopes of anything more than a fleeting foray in the top flight.

QPR haven't been in the Premier league for 15 years, but they were promoted as Champions, and lost twice at Loftus Road all season, conceding a measly 14 goals in 23 fixtures at home so they'll be pleased to start their campaign in London, against Bolton.

The other two promoted sides travel away, whilst Swansea might have little hope at the newly named Etihad Stadium (Man City), Norwich will fancy their chances against likely relegation bed fellows Wigan in what could already be a relegation 6 pointer!

On the opening day of last season Chelsea treated us to a 6-0 win at Stamford Bridge whilst there was also a 4-0, and two 3-0 victories. The Season before that one Arsenal were 6-1 winners at Everton, whilst 08/09 produced a 4-0 opening weekend win for Chelsea but 07/08 only involved 1 game which was won by more than a single goal.

The recent trend has been for one or two big wins on the opening day but it's not unusual for all these games to be close especially when you consider the fact that many of the big scoring sides are playing away. Looking at the fixtures Man City vs, Swansea produces perhaps the best chance of mauling even if Man City were a little goal shy last season.

The Premier League has always been a league of late goals. Last season nearly 1 out of every 5 goals scored came in the last 15 minutes of matches and on average every weekly set of 10 fixtures produce 7 goals in the last 15 minutes.

The volume of late goals tends to increase dramatically toward the end of the season as desperate and tired teams make more mistakes and fight harder in each diminishing opportunity to get the points required for their objectives so whilst there are normally plenty of late goals, the opening day should produce less than the average number of 7. Though with a lot of the big boys playing away, one or two could find themselves in need of late goals and this could drive the number up.
